🏛️ Career & Architecture
From artist to architectural professional
John Rees-Jowett's story cannot be understood through his artwork alone. Alongside his artistic development was a substantial professional career in architecture, a world of measured drawings, buildings, technical detail and design that would become closely intertwined with his art.
The surviving archive contains architectural drawings, documents, correspondence and other professional material that is gradually allowing this part of his life to be reconstructed.
Career & Architecture explores that professional journey.
Rather than separating the architect from the artist, this section examines the relationship between the two. The disciplined observation required by architecture can be seen throughout Rees-Jowett's later work, particularly in his remarkably detailed studies of cathedrals, churches, historic buildings and streetscapes.
As the archive is catalogued and further evidence is discovered, individual projects, buildings and stages of his professional career will be added here.
It is the story of two careers that increasingly appear to have been part of the same creative life.
