Inside the working process

Some of the most revealing material within the Rees-Jowett Architectural Archive was never intended to become a finished presentation.

Handwritten notes, annotations, calculations, sketches and other working material preserve traces of the thought process behind the drawing board, capturing ideas as they were considered, developed, altered and resolved.

These working documents can provide clues to individual projects and techniques, while also revealing the practical methods used by John Rees-Jowett during his professional architectural career.

A seemingly insignificant note, measurement or rough sketch may eventually help identify a building, reconnect separated documents or explain the purpose of a finished drawing elsewhere in the archive.

Rather than tidying away these fragments, this section preserves them as part of the historical record, offering a glimpse of architecture as a working process rather than simply a finished result.
