Reconnecting the drawings with the places they represent

Every architectural drawing begins with a place, but over time the connection between a surviving drawing and the building, project or location it represents can be lost.

This section of the Rees-Jowett Architectural Archive follows the investigative side of the collection, bringing together drawings, documents, maps, photographs and other evidence as we work to identify the buildings and places connected with John Rees-Jowett's professional career.

Names written in margins, addresses, dates, project references and even small architectural details can provide clues. By comparing evidence across the archive and with surviving buildings and historical records, individual pieces can gradually be returned to their original context.

Some identifications may be straightforward. Others may develop slowly as new evidence emerges. Where a connection remains uncertain, it will be recorded as such rather than presented as established fact.

The aim is not simply to catalogue drawings, but wherever possible to reconnect them with the real buildings, places and stories behind them.
