This limited-edition work records the sprawling Workington Iron & Steel Company in West Cumberland, a dramatic departure from many of Rees-Jowett's more picturesque architectural and townscape subjects.
Furnaces, chimneys and industrial structures dominate the horizon, softened by smoke and atmospheric washes, while the green foreground places the immense steelworks firmly within the surrounding Cumbrian landscape.
The work carries the inscription:
“WORKINGTON IRON & STEEL COMPANY, WEST CUMBERLAND
NOTED FOR 125 YEARS OF RAILMAKING FROM LOCAL OREFIELD”
The combination of image and inscription gives the work a documentary quality, recording both the appearance of the industrial complex and the importance attached to Workington's long tradition of rail manufacture.
