Landscapes & Countryside
Beyond the streets and stonework, Rees-Jowett's eye wandered into the landscape.
Across rivers, valleys, distant hills and open countryside, John Rees-Jowett recorded a quieter side of Britain and beyond, where architecture gives way to the natural world.
These works reveal his fascination with light, distance, water and changing terrain, from carefully observed rural scenes to expansive landscapes where the horizon becomes the dominant feature.
They also offer another side to the artist. Away from the precision of buildings and historic streets, his brush becomes freer, allowing colour and atmosphere to tell more of the story.
A journey beyond the buildings, into the landscapes John Rees-Jowett chose to remember.
Beyond architecture, Rees-Jowett also turned his eye to the British landscape, recording quieter places, rural buildings and the countryside around them.
Bidston Windmill, Wirral, Cheshire
Standing above the surrounding landscape, Bidston Windmill provides Rees-Jowett with a subject in which historic architecture and countryside become part of the same composition.
The windmill rises prominently between mature trees, its sails and distinctive tower carefully defined against a softly treated sky. Across the foreground, layers of exposed ground, grasses and vegetation create a more natural, textured landscape, rendered in restrained greens, ochres and earthy tones.
Rees-Jowett's characteristic attention to architectural detail remains evident in the structure of the mill, yet the building is not presented in isolation. Instead, it is firmly rooted within its setting, with the surrounding trees and uneven terrain forming an important part of the scene.
The result is both a study of a historic structure and a record of its place within the landscape, reflecting Rees-Jowett's wider interest in how Britain's built heritage and countryside exist alongside one another.

A COASTAL LANDSCAPE
Beyond his architectural work, John Rees-Jowett also recorded the landscapes and communities around him.
Here, buildings sit almost quietly within a much larger coastal landscape, with open water, rocky ground and an expansive sky dominating the composition. It reveals another side of Rees-Jowett's work, where architecture becomes part of the landscape rather than the principal subject.
